today's the first day of a new instagram challenge i'm taking part in and i'm super excited! i think i tried to do this last year and lasted about five days because i didn't have a plan.
that's all changed this year!
i mentioned during my #marchmeetthemaker posts that i created swatch books of both color combinations and sketches for idea inspiration.
siri is great at helping me pick a number to use and i plan to track these as well so that i don't duplicate [if possible] - but here's what today looked like:
i was a little unsure of this color combo, but i'm happy that i stuck with it. i used the sketch as inspiration but definitely changed things around a little.
i had an idea of what i wanted the sentiment to be as well as what die-cut i wanted to use so i began with a rough sketch, something that i always try to do.
this usually ends up being the scrap of paper that i scribble colors on, dab ink on and wipe adhesive on as well. i leave myself basic notes so that i know where i'm putting each color - just ignore my messy handwriting. i try to make these notes without over thinking so that i can get it done!
i really like the way this guy came together and i'm so happy that i made several of them! i'll be adding them to my online shop later this week. i feel like lots of people might be missing the faces of their favorite people and want to share some handmade happiness with them.
the triangular texture on the red block is designed to mimic the triangles on the body of the gnome. i added a third element of triangles with the black chevron pattern on the right side of the card front.
i thought that the wood grain pattern [while in a non traditional color] was fitting for the little gnome friend. i added some prismacolor marker strokes to try and add dimension and detail to his beard.
the sentiment reading "miss your face" is fitting since you can't see the face of the gnome aside from his little nose.
the black ink of the sentiment coordinates with the chevrons as well and i felt like this really pulled the entire card design together. the gnome is elevated off of the card base with foam tape to help him stand out.
i'm so exited about this challenge and am really looking forward to building up some inventory for my online shop. i'll be adding all the cards to an online gallery of sorts, similar to the mail it monday gallery.
the idea is for me to post and share everyday, but i'm going to give myself some grace, just in case that doesn't happen. i hope you'll follow along - it's going to be great!
